It wasn't always 'realistic', but it didn't need to be. Something that I have always felt the first few games in the series excelled at, and never quite got the recognition it deserved.
Ultimately, while I do believe TROTR will be a better game than the first, and yes, it'll likely have actual Tomb Raiding that isn't relegated to optional rooms that grant you optional treasure and salvage parts to upgrade weapons that are already powerful enough as it is, it's 'grounded' approach will reflect in it's level design. A game about 'survival' and showing the evolution of Lara Croft becoming a strong female lead is made superfluous when you never felt like you were struggling to survive and completely negates the fact that Lara Croft was ALWAYS a strong female lead from the very beginning, and it didn't need to shove it down our throats to tell us either. Then again, I've always disliked the way they handled Lara in the TR'13 reboot. It's kind of ironic how Tomb Raider is now far closer to what Uncharted was, than Uncharted was to being Tomb Raider. It's certainly an above average Uncharted clone. It IS a good game, but for all the wrong reasons. I've played through it once on PC and once on the PS4. I guess you could say that I miss the puzzles, the platforming that doesn't hold your hand, the unobtrusive HUD, the creative, inspired, and well implemented level design, and a hundred other things that make Tomb Raider what it is in my mind.īut I would like to state that despite my negative feelings towards the reboot series and it's direction - the first game played very well. Who knows? Maybe the third game will be an actual Tomb Raider game. The second game looks like a brutal stealth game.
The first game was a cinematic set piece showcase. I just don't like the new direction this series has gone. ThatEnglishDude 2337d ago (Edited 2337d ago )
